Always: Guitars and Friends

"I'm a lucky one, I've known much kindness and grace,

So many helping hands that led me from place to place."

                                                              "No One in Particular"

I've been so lucky along the way to play with many talented musicians and songwriters. It was like whenever I needed someone to pick a guitar up with, there they were. These pictures above are from Morgantown WV in the mid-1970's. Bart Drees, on the left, had a tremendous impact on me, making me believe that I could write a tune. In the picture above right, Bart and I are playing with John Ryan, a great songwriter. I learned recently that John died a few months ago. He could really sing, was a truly strange dude, and had great hair. Both of these pictures were taken at the Potter's Cellar, a big part of Morgantown's lively coffeehouse scene at the time.

On the left, it's August 1977 and I'm preparing to leave for Oklahoma. Where , thank God, I found Tommy Dickey, on the right. Tommy has a voice to die for and, with his band Two Dollar Bill, recorded two of my songs.

In 1980 I landed in Cortland NY, where I  remain. Above left is Nikki LaRowe, another great singer. She operated LaRowe's Zoo, where she and I played frequently. Above right I'm playing at the Zoo with Colleen Kattau, a brilliant singer/songwriter who has gone on to make quite a name for herself.

More recently, my partners in rhyme have included Tom Pasquarello, Nan Pasquarello, and Bill Harris. The three performances above took place at the Homer Center for the Arts in 2018. 2019 and 2020, with Tom and Nan helping me on "Face to Face" and "One-Way Ticket" and Tom and Bill pitching in on "Here's to What's Left."
